FieldCenter App Update

Project Goal:
Modernize the interface and organization of an existing iPad application to align with updated branding, improve discoverability and usability, and incorporate user-requested features-while maintaining all current functionality

Tools Used:

  • Paper prototyping
  • Adobe Illustrator (for the high-resolution prototypes)
  • InVision (for interactive prototyping)

The iPad application had been designed with several custom controls that were not based on standards, making it difficult for users to find several controls necessary for the effective use of the application. For the overall application the goal was to keep the current functionality, but make it more discoverable by the user.

One of the first steps was to map out the application and document the current functionality and workflows already in place. Starting with paper wireframes, the team was able to iterate through ideas faster before moving to higher fidelity prototypes and eventually an interactive prototype using InVision.

Lessons Learned:

  • Standardization Matters: Leveraging platform-standard controls significantly enhances usability and reduces user frustration.
  • Early Mapping is Crucial: Thoroughly documenting existing workflows ensures no functionality is lost and highlights opportunities for improvement.
  • Tool Flexibility: Even without the latest UI design tools, a structured process and clear communication can yield excellent results.
